This is the latest step in its multi-year strategic transformation, as it calls it

Ever since Rory Read took leadership of Advanced Micro Devices back in August 2011, the corporation has been in the process of transforming itself.

The common man hasn't felt it much, perhaps, but AMD has been trying to become more efficient while freeing itself from being defined in relation to Intel.

The latter goal has seen some limited success, though as long as it continues to make CPUs, whether or not they're called APUs, it will still be considered Intel's rival.

That's neither here nor there, though. This time around, AMD has announced an internal reorganization.

You see, the company has decided to merge all its business units (CPU, GPU, memory), sales organization and global operations into a single, dichotomic whole.

One half of said dichotomy is the Computing and Graphics Business Group, formerly divided into the client, consumer graphics and professional graphics businesses, plus the related product engineering and sales functions.

The other half will be the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group, combining AMD's server, embedded, dense server and semi-custom businesses.

The former division will be led by Chief Sales Officer John Byrne, and he will report to Dr. Lisa Su.

Speaking of whom, Dr. Lisa Su will lead the Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom Business Group, while also holding the post of AMD COO (chief operating officer).
