AMD is determined to keep Intel alert and for that purpose the company is launching three new Opteron models. This type of processor helped AMD to reach an impressive percentage on the x86 architecture server market.

The three new models are Opteron 180, 280 and 880, they operate at 2.4 GHz and are aimed at the one, two or eight CPU servers. The 280 and 880 models are available starting today, and Opteron 180 will be introduced in 30 days.

Their prices, for 1,000 unit shipments, are $2,649 for Opteron 880, $1,299 for the 280 model, and $799 for the 180 model.

With these models, AMD hopes to regain a significant advantage over Intel, which will produce dual-core processors towards the end of the year.

The Opteron processors are used by some of the most important server producers: ca HP, IBM and Sun.

Another goal AMD hopes to achieve by introducing these models is to ease the transition to dual-core processors and to 64-bit computing.

Randy Allen, corporate VP of the server products division at AMD, said that he is thrilled by the performances recorded by Opteron, 80 of the biggest 100 companies using Opteron based servers.

Allen also outlined that there is already support from software producers, 1,300 Opteron certified applications from 300 developers being already available.
