The Eclipse Foundation is one of the most important groups that are aimed at providing developers with a comprehensive set of tools and software development kits and frameworks in order to simplify the creation and deployment of open source applications based on popular and widely spread programming languages like Java and C. This group just gained an important ally as the second largest central processing unit manufacturing company in the world, Advanced Micro Devices, announced that is has joined the Eclipse Foundation.

According to a press release concerning this event AMD is joining the software development group as a part of its support for open source standards and applications while providing the developers with documentations needed by them for better harnessing the power of the multi core x86 hardware architecture.

''AMD joins a prestigious group of companies and individuals devoted to establishing and standardizing an open, extensible development platform and application frameworks,'' said Mike Milinkovich, executive director, Eclipse Foundation, Inc. ''We look forward to AMD's contributions to our open source community.''

As it has only recently been introduced, the native quad core central processing unit architecture from AMD lacks the software applications that are able to make the most of it and as the first quad core processors are aimed at working in a server environment, all possible optimizations are desired that could make mission critical applications run faster and with greater productivity.

Apart from the server environment, the upcoming AMD Phenom class of processors will be aimed at the desktop computing systems and they are hoped to have a great impact on the user attainable performance levels. The collaboration between AMD and the Eclipse Foundation is aimed at harnessing the great processing power of the Opteron and Phenom class of processors and provide both software developers and users with a new performance boost.

''Today's announcement marks another milestone in AMD's ongoing effort to offer customers high-performing computing based on open standards,'' said Earl Stahl, vice president, Software Engineering, AMD. ''As we participate in the Eclipse community building development platforms and application frameworks, AMD will enable software created with Eclipse tools and plug-ins that is optimized for multi-core technology.''
