The investments made in the Opteron processor are starting to pay off. As pointed out by a Mercury Research study for the second semester of this year, Opteron represents 11.1% of all the processors built on x86 architecture aimed at servers.

For AMD, this market share is even more important considering that Opteron is the first processor for servers and workstations. Until two years ago, AMD didn't even have a model for this segment of processors.

Ben Williams, vicepresident of AMD's commercial business department, considers that this market share has been reached because companies like HP, SUN and IBM have launched Opteron based solutions.

Aside from this segment, AMD has recorded an overall increase of 38% compared to last year, with sales reaching $767 million.

Moreover, SUN officials said that they will collaborate with AMD to develop the Opteron solution, but they didn't provide other details.
