Selena Gomez was a heartbroken angel at the American Music Awards 2014, held live at Nokia Theater LA Live and aired on ABC and TNT. The singer debuted her brand new single, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” and the performance was so touching that even good friend Taylor Swift was crying in her seat in the audience.

Selena too cried, as you can see in the video below.

The song features what sounds like a legitimate phone message in Selena’s voice, in which she talks about betrayal and heartbreak. Once that ended, she emerged on stage in a gorgeous nude-colored dress with a deep V-cut and a slash to the thigh – and put on what voices online are describing as her best live performance ever.

Towards the end of the song, Selena got very chocked up, and was even seen mouthing the words “Thank you, Jesus.” Also towards the end, as she sang “I thought you were the one,” a male silhouette appeared on the screen behind her and many fans online believe that it was none other than Justin Bieber, for whom Selena wrote the song.

Indeed, this is one of her most intimate and beautiful ballads, and it is said to have been inspired by her ill-fated, on-and-off romance with Justin Bieber. As we speak, the two are no longer together but that’s only because he is said to have hurt her one too many times for her to be able to continue in the relationship.

As for all those rumors that the Bieber romance ruined her relationship to best friend Taylor Swift, well, judging by her reaction at the end, that wasn’t the case. Once Selena was back in the audience, Taylor welcomed her with a hug. From the photos posted to Twitter, she seemed to be still crying.
