Although new on the market, the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens doesn't bring any improvements over its older sibling in terms of optical quality, sharing the same features as the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G released back in 2011.
The design of the lens is the only thing making a difference between the two. It comes with a restyled focus ring that gives it a classic look complemented by a silver ring around the barrel, similar to the ones found on most old Nikkor lenses.
This gives a classy touch to the new lens and makes it stand out from the crowd solely from its looks rather than its optical performance.
Coming at a price of $276.95 / €205, the new AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens is around $60 / €44 more expensive than its predecessor despite the fact that it doesn't bring any optical improvements.
If you already own the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G lens, there's no reason to buy this new version, but if you plan to purchase a new 50mm lens for your camera and you care about its looks, this new lens might do the trick.
All that said, the new AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition lens could be the first in a line of new retro-styled lenses coming from the Nippon manufacturer.
