The first Prince of Persia came out on the Apple II way back in 1989 and was a huge success that made use of realistic character movement and an enticing gameplay. Unlike many platformers of the time it was also one of the very few, if not the only one, that didn't focus on ranged combat and projectile weapons. All the Prince could rely on was his faithful sword. The game has a direct sequel, Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame, that was made five years later, in 1994, but it didn't achieve even a quarter of what the first one did. Another five years after, Prince of Persia 3D was made, and it turned out to be a real disappointment.

But the Prince of Persia would end up once again in the spotlight, and this time it lived to the standards the first game imposed. When Ubisoft got involved with the project and released Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2003, the game was reborn. With amazing graphics, a good story and an acrobatic gameplay that would become what all the other games had to match, this new iteration proved that the Phoenix could also rise from sand and not only ashes.

The game had three more sequels, all proving to be successful. Prince of Persia Warrior Within and The Two Thrones were excellent titles, set apart only by individual tastes. In 2008 Ubisoft developed and published Prince of Persia, which featured a protagonist with a completely opposite character to the one in the previous three releases. Most fans weren't pleased by the change, but admitted that the fresh look the game received and the story it followed made it a good title.

Now it seems that a new Prince of Persia is in the making. Spotted by Superannuation, a new trademark was filed by Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner. The name is "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands" and it seems it will have a close tie-in with the upcoming summer movie based on the Prince of Persia universe, Persia: The Sands of Time. It's a pretty interesting twist of events if so, since the game inspired the movie that will now be the basis for another game. If this continues, a CRC will lead to an endless stream of Persians.
