Lightweight with NVIDIA graphics

Earlier this week, NVIDIA stood by its promise and detailed the technology it announced back at the Consumer Electronics Show, in January, namely Optimus. As we detailed in a previous article, Optimus has been designed for the notebook market, enabling NVIDIA to continue to pair its mobile GeForce GPUs with Intel's latest processors, despite their on going dispute over the licensing rights of NVIDIA's chipsets with support for Nehalem processors. Aside from that, Optimus is a technology that consumers will take advantage of, without them even knowing. On that note, today we got the ASUS UL50Vf notebook, one of the first products to incorporate the said technology.

This notebook has been designed to pair one of Intel's low-voltage processors with NVIDIA's GeForce G210 graphics processor, enabling consumers to take advantage of an ultraportable design, but with the necessary performance to smoothly run graphics-demanding applications. Thanks to the genius behind the technology, NVIDIA's Optimus will work with a wide range of Intel CPUs, including Arrandale, Penryn or Pine Trail-based processors, meaning that just about every Intel notebook out there can support an NVIDIA graphics card and the new graphics technology.

Talking about the notebook, which will soon put through its paces, we have to highlight the use of brushed aluminium and the chiclet keyboard. The notebook feels very thin, but, because of its large display, we can't say it's really lightweight. Nevertheless, the laptop stands out as one of the lightest in its category. At the core of the system, is a Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU, clocked at 1.3GHz and paired with the aforementioned NVIDIA GPU.

We will be putting this through all the necessary steps to indicate the performance level the UL50VF can achieve, with a main focus on NVIDIA's own Optimus technology. So stay tuned for a link to the review of this new ASUS notebook.

Update: We can now provide you with a link to our review of the Optimus-enabled UL50Vf. You can read our take on the said laptop following this link.
