An Apple job listing call for a full-time Cellular Systems Performance Engineer who is familiar with cellular technologies such as GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA and CDMA, which indicates that Cupertino may finally release a CDMA-ready device, most likely in agreement with Verizon.

Rumors of a deal between Apple and the giant US wireless operator have been floating around for almost a year now.

To some analysts and tech pundits, it seems only logical that Apple break away from its exclusive agreement with AT&T to try selling more iPhones through Verizon.

A position for “Cellular Systems Perf Eng” is open at Apple’s Santa Clara Valley offices, where the Mac maker has a team “responsible for triaging protocol issues reported from certification test, IOT and field tests, driving for continuous performance improvements.”

“The team will work closely with internal development team, radio stack vendor, certification and field test teams,” Apple explains.

But they need a new guy. Someone who is well versed in Cellular Technology, including GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA, CDMA etc.

The candidate must have “Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills, expert in 3GPP layer 1-3 protocols from both UE and infrastructure sides, deep understanding of peer to peer protocol procedures and inter-layer interactions.”

As far as tasks are concerned, the applicant will need to be able to “Diagnose protocol issues in lab testing and field testing, provide input to development team on failure scenarios and potential fixes.”

In addition to these daily duties, the new recruit will develop post-processing scripts and tools to facilitate log analysis, according to Apple.

Must-have skills include:

- Strong interpersonal skills (required to establish and maintain inter-departmental relationships). - Strong verbal and written communication skills - MSEE/EE or technical degree with relevant experience, and 3+ years experience in technical role. - Perl, TCL, Visual C#/Visual Basic

Apple will consider hiring a person based on the aforementioned criteria, but those who also have C/C++ expertise, as well as experience with different carrier networks and infrastructures are the ideal candidates for this job.
