John van Walwyk, a 90-year-old pensioner, is as fit as a youngster, pumping iron and exercising at the gym at least three times per week. His secret is spinach and Guinness, giving him just enough proteins to make him feel like the real-life version of famous cartoons character Popeye the sailor.

The super-fit man has a personalized exercise routine that starts with hour-long walks to the gym, lifting weights, climbing on the step machine and a combination of 14 different exercises. John is currently living in sheltered accommodation and exercises at the gym for at least three days a week.

After becoming a vegetarian, his diet revolved around the green power of spinach, and despite his age, he is not using support or a walking stick like his fellow seniors from the shelter.

“I'm a vegetarian and so my wife feeds me spinach all the time. It's a great source of iron that people who lift weights usually get from meat,” the man says according to Daily Mail.

Another important element of his diet is Guinness as it also has a strong amount of iron, and helps real-life Popeye to stay fit and healthy. People have admired John's commitment to stay healthy and some may even feel jealous of his amazing physique.

The gym where Mr. van Walwyk works out promised him a free membership after he reaches the age of 100. “I've great admiration for John and certainly hope that I will be as active as he is when I reach 90 years of age,” Natalie Moss, the gym's manager said, notes Daily Mail.

John van Walwyk is quite the role model for people of all ages as his diet and commitment keep him healthy and fit. The grandfather-of-two used to work in a factory building ship parts and then served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment in Burma in 1944. He began exercising and dieting after gaining a few extra pounds and never quit since.
