They have 140mm fans and power outputs of 500W and 600W

Windows may not be expected to cause too many extra PC sales, but the number of new systems sold will still be in the millions, so Cougar doesn't lose anything by launching a new PSU series.

Called RX Power Supply Series, the new range of PSUs seems to suggest that Cougar is fully aware of how Windows 8 does not need any extra resources compared to Windows 7.

This is actually one of the “problems” that DRAM makers have with the operating system. Since it does not have higher system requirements than Windows 8, there is no reason for PC owners to buy more RAM, or for PC buyers to get more than usual.

It is the main reason DRAM sales aren't expected to rise that much, unlike when other versions of the OS appeared.

There are two models in the Cougar RX series, with 500W and 600W outputs and efficiency of over 82%, earning them 80Plus certification. Active power factor correction is supported as well (Active PFC).

The real asset that Cougar points out, though, is the Dynamic Dual 12V design. There are two voltage rails in the CPU, one for the CPU (central processing unit) and one for the GPU, if present (graphics processing unit).

What's more, Cougar RX can automatically redirect energy from the unused lines and, thus, improve the performance of the 12V lines in systems with SLI or CrossFire multi-GPU configurations.

It is for this reason that the newcomers are described as suitable for high-end PCs even though their outputs are arguably low.

Finally, the 140mm fan affords to spin more slowly than a 120mm fan would, thus generating less noise. The rotary speed can even adjust itself based on temperature.

Sadly, though Cougar did publish all relevant information about the orange-red RX power supply units, it failed to say what prices they had.
