At least 70 people have been killed and many others have been injured during the crash of a building in Bangladesh, reports are saying.

According to Gawker, officials could have prevented the deaths of the workers and visitors in the facility, had they listened to the workers’ concerns.

The same publication lists nearly 600 people as injured in the crash on Wednesday, April 24, making it one of the most tragic incidents of this kind in the country in years.

A photo shot on site captures the moment in which hundreds look up as the building falls to pieces, practically disintegrating. The snapshot has been attached to this news article.

The complex served as headquarters for four garment factories, a bank and several stores. Voice of America adds that the incident took place at the Rana Plaza shopping center in the Savar area.

Officials are saying that the most casualties have been registered in the garment facilities. Workers who have survived the incident told reporters that signs of the crash turned up one day before, but were ignored by their employers.

At least one employee noted cracks in the walls and reported the incident. However, the warnings listed on Tuesday have gone unnoticed and workers were called in as usual today.

The building collapsed with some 5,000 people inside, this morning. Rescue teams are now scouring the wrecks for survivors, local news stations mention.

The crash could have been caused by builders failing to observe relevant regulations. Issues with safety regulations have caused problems in the area before. Some 100 people have died in a fire in the area in November.

More casualties could be reported throughout the day. This story is still developing and we will keep you updated as it progresses.
