Diana Nyad has completed a swim from Cuba to Florida, being the first person in the world to get through with the task without shark cage or additional help.

This is 64-year-old Nyad's fifth attempt and her first successful one. In the past, she was forced to stop on account of an asthma attack, getting stung by jellyfish or simply getting too tired.

According to the Miami Herald, the long-distance swimmer finished the course on the Florida Straits on Monday.

She swam for 52 hours, 54 minutes and 18.6 seconds, covering a distance of 110 miles (177 km) and ending the journey at Smather’s Beach. A crowd of 2,000 were there to greet her.

“I’ve got three messages: One is, we should never, ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams,” she advises.
