Last week, the supermarket chain SuperValu started warning customers that their financial details might have been compromised after cybercriminals breached the systems of Loyaltybuild, a marketing company that handles SuperValu’s “Gataway Breaks” loyalty program.

A total of 62,500 SuperValu customers are said to be affected.

Initial reports said that only thousands of customers were impacted. However, according to The Independent, SuperValu is now telling customers that the breach is much more serious than initially believed.

The 62,500 impacted individuals are the ones who used their payment cards to pay for SuperValu’s “Gataway Breaks” loyalty program between January 2011 and February 2012.

In a statement posted on its website, Loyaltybuild revealed that the breach was identified by its security team on October 25.

SuperValu is not the only one of Loyaltybuild’s clients that has been impacted by the security breach. The Irish Times informs that Axa Insurance and Stena Line are also affected. The Data Protection Commissioner and the police have been notified.
