Apple launched the new iPhone SE earlier this month, and the device is projected to start shipping to customers this upcoming Friday.

For many people out there, the new iPhone SE isn’t worth the money, as it looks exactly like its predecessor, which in turn looks exactly like the old iPhone 8 introduced so many years ago.

And while this is true, the magic in the new iPhone SE comes down to what’s under the hood.

The device features notable hardware upgrades, and the most important is without a doubt the addition of 5G.

This is what’s going to make it quite a hit, Digitimes believes, with a recent analysis revealing that Apple expects to sell no less than 30 million units this year alone.

Significant sales increase over the predecessor

If you believe this isn’t by any means impressive, it is. First of all, keep in mind it’s the iPhone SE we’re talking about here, so it’s not exactly the flagship iPhone that Apple launches with so much fanfare. Then, the 2020 overhaul of the iPhone SE reached 25 million units in terms of sales in its first year on the market, so it’s pretty clear the addition of 5G is expected to fuel this growth.

People with knowledge of the matter said this could be the last year when the iPhone SE comes in a 4.7-inch body. This is because Apple is reportedly planning to make the switch to an iPhone XR or iPhone 11-inspired design, obviously with a notch, Face ID and everything else.

In other words, even the smallest iPhone SE will get bigger, which for Apple customers in search of a smaller form factor could end up becoming quite a major shortcoming.

The iPhone mini is also getting the ax this year, as the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup will no longer include the 5.4-inch model. Apple will introduce a new iPhone 14 Max that will sport a 6.7-inch display, so the iPhone SE would essentially remain the only small iPhone in the entire lineup.
