The Environmental Protection Agency in the United States now says that, according to its investigations, roughly 55% of the country's rivers currently find themselves in poor condition and are therefore unfit to properly sustain aquatic life.

Inhabitat informs us that, for the most part, these rivers are experiencing a shrinkage in their natural vegetation cover.

As well as this, researchers working with the agency have discovered that some of the rivers have a rather elevated phosphorous and nitrogen content. Apparently, certain rivers even contain traces of mercury and bacteria pollution.

EPA also maintains that, for the time being, just 21% of the country's rivers and streams are untainted and therefore suitable for aquatic life.

“We must continue to invest in protecting and restoring our nation’s streams and rivers as they are vital sources of our drinking water, provide many recreational opportunities, and play a critical role in the economy,” stated Nancy Stoner on behalf of EPA.
