Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., global leader in semiconductor, telecommunication, digital media and digital convergence technologies has announced in a press release that it will enter production with a 4GB SSD designed specially for portable devices and PCS that will run the upcoming Windows Vista. The solid state disk will function in conjunction with the operating system serving as a high speed NAND flash cache.

"By caching Hard Drive data using Samsung's flash SSD and the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, a typical user will see performance gains that will make working with their PC lightning fast," said Don Barnetson, Director, Flash Marketing, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.

The 4 GB Samsung caching solution will bundle with Windows ReadyBoost, the Vista feature that uses flash memory technology to increase system performance while improving on the issue of HDD delays. Frequently used application will be populated in the background that is the SSD permitting for instantaneous data access and accelerating routine system actions. "When a user requests that data, rather than being limited to servicing 100-200 requests per second (as with a traditional HDD), Samsung's SSD can service up to 5000 request per second, virtually eliminating data seek delays. The 4GB SSD can work in tandem with a hybrid hard drive, coming into play as a secondary source of cached data," reads Samsung's press release. Because the Vista ReadyBoost device compresses the data stored, the SSD flash memory connected through an ATA port from anywhere on the motherboard, will actually comprise 8GB of data.
