Present day laptops have made great strides when it comes down to battery life but users seem to be demanding even more, so 3M Optical Systems Division is keen to let us know they have worked together with Acer in order to “usher in a new era of energy-efficient notebooks,” the result being the Aspire TimelineX series with up to eight-hour of battery life.

In order to deliver on that promise, Acer TimelineX notebooks make use of 3M’s multi-layer optical films that enhance brightness, enabling the Taiwanese manufacturer to further decrease the power consumption of their TimelineX notebooks by dimming the backlighting of the display without sacrificing image quality (according to 3M at least).

Furthermore, 3M also states that by using these new films, displays will actually get improved viewing angles while also reducing the number of internal components used thus contributing to an ultra-thin, sleek form factor.

And if you still have your doubts when it comes down to 3M's claims, you should know that company has also a study to show for itself that states 85% of respondents liked the display with 3M film solutions not only for its brightness, but also enhanced picture quality, while 98% would be willing to pay more for a display with 3M solution.

“The Acer Aspire TimelineX notebooks have truly set a new standard for the industry,” said Jim Bauman, 3M’s vice president and general manager, 3M Optical Systems Division.

“To deliver a powerful, energy-efficient notebook with high picture quality in an ultra-slim design provides users with an unparalleled mobile computing experience.

I’m pleased 3M and Acer can deliver this product to the market,” concluded the company's rep.

However impressive this may seem one has to note that battery life greatly depends on the way the laptop is used, going up to eight hours on an TimelineX usually meaning you have to give up on the amenities while also going for a light workload such as web browsing.
