Could this be the advent of the age of pico projectors?

The idea of a projector so tiny that it could be transported even in one's pocket has been floating around for quite a long time now, several companies touting their models of this type at the various technology shows around the world, without finite products actually arriving in stores. However, it would seem that things are about to change, since the German division of the 3M company has just announced its plans to release the MPro110 LcoS micro-projector at some point in early October.

The first thing that's really impressive about the Mpro110 is its dimensions, the projector being tinier than just about anything you've seen before. The device measures only 5.08cm x 2.29cm x 11.43cm and weighs 140 grams, which is less than some of the bulkier smartphones or PDAs available on the market.

The ultra-small projector uses LCoS technology and attains a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. The native aspect ratio of the projected images is 4:3, while these have some pretty OK sizes, ranging between 0 and 127 centimeters.

Moreover, the Mpro110 doesn't require a cooling fan, which means that it won't generate any noise. It's powered by a rechargeable Li-Ion battery, which grants it around one hour of continuous functioning time.

The connectivity options of the MPro110 are not exactly particularly impressive, since we're dealing with 1 VGA D-Sub interface (both input and output), as well as a Composite video input. That's probably because most portable and ultra-portable computing systems (with which this thing will most likely be paired) are equipped with VGA connectors, rather than HDMI, at least for the time being.

According to 3M, the price of the MPro110 LcoS micro-projector will be somewhere in the 350–400 Euro range, which is significantly less than most of the other projectors out there, and not even that much, given the device's ultra-portable nature.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
