Although 3DMark 11 has now been released that doesn't mean overclockers will stop showing love for 3DMark Vantage just overnight, a new world record being set today by one of the most famous names in the overclocking game, k|ngp|n managing to shatter its previous record by obtaining no less than 74,741 points.

This latest result brings us very close to the 75,000 mark, a barrier that overclockers have been trying to surpass for quite some time.

In order to achieve this impressive result, k|ngp|n went with one of the most powerful setups available on the market that makes use of no less than four EVGA GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards paired together with a EVGA Classified SR-2 motherboard.

Definitely one of the craziest solutions available out there, the Classified SR-2 was designed especially with the overclocker in mind, this motherboard featuring dual LGA 1366 sockets that were populated with two six-core Xeon X5680 processors.

Other hardware components used in this rig include a 6GB G.Skill Perfect Storm memory kit as well as dual EVGA Classified 1200W PSUs to deliver the huge amounts of juice needed for powering up this system.

Of course that in order to achieve the highest 3DMark Vantage score known to man, one also has to go into some overclocking, k|ngp|n using liquid nitrogen for cooling the processors as well as the four graphics cards, the LN2 pots used for doing this being of his own making (k|ngp|n also retails such pots).

Using this cooling setup, k|ngp|n managed to run the two Xeon processors at 5,600MHz while the four GTX 580 graphics cards were clocked at 1,100MHz core and 1,180MHz memory.

The previous world record was also achieved by k|ngp|n using a similar setup, but after some more tweaking (and a lot of benching probably) the overclcoker was able to achieve this impressive result that brings him a lot closer to the 75,000 mark. (via HWbot.org)
