Dentists use the 3Shape Implant Studio software for many things, from dental implant planning to surgical guides. Soon, they may be able to use 3D printers to make implants and fillings.

And it's all thanks to Stratasys, which has teamed up with 3Shape to integrate 3D printing into the program.

In fact, the latest release of the software has pre-settings for sending digital models to Stratasys’ Objet30 OrthoDesk and Objet Eden 3D printers.

The Objet line of dental 3D printers has already been recognized in the field of dentistry, receiving several awards.

Avi Cohen, director of global dental at Stratasys, believes that the new software will help accelerate implementation of digital dental services, extending mass customization to small and mid-sized labs.

The integration of 3D printing won't affect how dentists virtually manipulate a detailed CBCT scan, but it should make the actual creation of the final filling and tooth models a lot easier and quicker.
