There will not be any waste associated with production, at least for the case

Smartphones, like any other product in our primarily capitalistic world economy, are made in bulk, which means that excess stock is always a risk and that lots of resources can go to waste. Fairphone didn't want their eponymous smartphone to suffer from that.

To that end, they have established a partnership with Dutch distributed 3D printing service 3D Hubs. The latter will be 3D printing the cases of the Fairphone in one of several colors. The color options vary by region, oddly enough.

At present, there are five designs that Fairphone is running with, but there is an ongoing “Design a Day Challenge” as well, which allows everyone in the extended Fairphone community to submit ideas.

Joris van Tubergen is the one who created the current cases, and he will look through the other submissions for further inspiration. The goal is to have 10 different cases to select from, each for the price of €18 / $25.

You'll have to buy the Fairphone itself first, of course, since you will only get a new phone case for such little money. You should be able to order either product, or at least the case, from anywhere in the world, since there are 6,000 “locations” that 3D Hubs operates out of.
