Yet highly unlikely

As reported earlier today, next-gen iPhone mockups and concept designs are simmering in fanboys' anticipation of WWDC '09 and the possible certain release of new iPhone models. The latest such mockups come via Modmyi, whose posters have hopped on the iPhone-concept train to offer mighty realistic and exciting, fresh, next-gen iPhone renderings.

Just like with the previous mockups, these designs also seem highly unlikely to make new iPhones. One reason is the myriad of buttons lying under the glossy touchscreen. This device has no front camera, while the back lens seems to be just as untouched, although Apple is widely believed to implement 3.2-megapixel cameras in its new iPhones. Just as unlikely is the overall hefty-looking device – whatever the number of new functions Apple is thinking of adding in next-gen iPhones, they surely won't make them much bulkier than current-gen devices.

However, we can't help but imagine how very suitable a keyboard like this (pictured below) would be for texting, gaming, even blogging, and so on. With Apple being expected to release two new iPhones, one nano, we can well expect some of this concept to materialize. Still, we don't reckon Apple will go any further with the size of the iPhone. If it does, it will not be an iPhone, but perhaps a netbook, or a Mac tablet.

As the poster over at Modmyi outilnes, this new iPhone concept indeed looks quite real, but only up to the point where the screen is slid up and the keyboard revealed. Apple is king when it comes to reducing the number of physical controls on a device, and the third-generation iPod shuffle stands as a clear evidence of that.

Let's make it clear: Apple does not have to, and will not add 40+ buttons on its iPhone when thousands of functions are already beautifully performed through the iPhone OS Multi-Touch interface.
