Cosmetic companies are slowly orienting themselves towards coming up with products that can serve more than just one purpose. We’ve had, so far, several lipglosses that claim to aid a woman in losing weight by acting as appetite suppressants, while also making the lips plumper. Coming to respond and try to offer a solution to a cruel reality in the UK, businesswoman Tracy Whittaker has created the lippy that can detect drugs in drinks, the Daily Mail informs.

The 2LoveMyLips gloss is just like an average lippy in terms of quality and package. It stands out though for coming out with test strips that can allow a suspicious woman to test whether her drink has been spiked with drugs or not, and thus offer her the chance to alert the police and get out of harm’s way. The strips turn blue if GHB or ketamine is present in the drink.

“If a drink tastes funny, or you are suspicious, you dab the ends of the taper into your drink and, if they turn blue, tell your friends immediately and get help from security and the police – it’s that simple.” Tracy Whittaker says for the Mail. She and partner Tina Dutton created the product, and are currently in talks with Boots and Tesco to bring it on store shelves for the decent price tag of £9.99.

An estimated 10,000 people have been victims to spiked drinks and abuse in Britain, with over 600 cases occurring in 2007 alone, according to reports. Given the upcoming release of 2LoveMyLips lippy, the charity the Roofie Foundation hopes the number of victims will decrease considerably because they will now have a way to determine whether they’re at any risk. “We hope this creates awareness of the problem. There are still so many people who don’t realize drink-spiking is going on.” Graham Rhodes, head of the charity, says for the British media.

Further details on the 2LoveMyLips kit are not yet available. However, given the initial reception of the product, chances are it will become available at Boots and Tesco in the following months and more specifics will also be made public in due time. Keep an eye on this space for when they are.
