The development team at 2K Marin says that it is getting ready to reveal a rebooted version of its XCOM-based shooter in a matter of days.

On the official 2K publisher blog, they state, “The XCOM universe is expanding. In the coming days the world will get a fresh look at the long-awaited squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin.”

They acknowledge that nothing has been shown of the game since E3 2011 and that the shooter concept has evolved significantly.

They add, “Firaxis' critically acclaimed turn-based strategy title, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, has reignited the classic franchise and we feel that the time is right to deliver a new experience within the world of XCOM.”

This suggests that the team might be getting ready to offer a game that’s set in the same universe as the strategy experience, even if it uses an earlier date and will focus more on characters than on the overall alien invasion.

2K Marin describes the new XCOM shooter as a narrative-driven experience that uses the core concepts of the series, although the team is offering no clear details on how the game will work and what characters it will use.

They are also emphasizing that 2K has given them the freedom to explore new ideas with XCOM, even if they have not panned out.

2K Marin has not confirmed that the new title will use the name The Bureau or that the action will take place in the ‘60s.

The official reveal will probably include some gameplay images and information on what platforms the XCOM shooter will arrive on.

At the moment, rumors suggest that Firaxis is also working on an entirely new strategy-based experience for the franchise, which might be linked to the next generation of consoles as well as the PC.
