Apple is at its third attempt to address battery performance on its wireless peripherals with the release of the 2009 Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0. The update is almost an exact replica of the former Aluminum Wireless Keyboard Firmware Update 1.1, which Apple said would improve the battery performance of the Apple Wireless Keyboard (2007) when used with the Apple Magic Mouse and some Bluetooth headsets.

The 2009 Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 aims to “improve battery performance of the 2009 Aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard when used in combination with other Bluetooth devices (example Magic Mouse, Bluetooth headsets).” The company then proceeds to list the steps users need to follow to apply the update properly. "Your 2009 Aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard must be connected or paired to perform this update.

The update package will install an updater application into the Applications/Utilities folder and will launch it automatically.

Once launched, please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.

If you are installing from a Mac portable, your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source.

Click Continue to begin the update process."

In usual manner, Apple’s Downloads section offers a link to the Support area of the company’s website where a detailed overview of the 2009 Aluminum Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0 is posted.

For example, Support document HT4019 reveals that some USB and FireWire devices may prevent the firmware update from installing correctly. As a resolution, Apple advises users to disconnect non-essential devices and use only an Apple keyboard and mouse to apply the update. Also important is to not power off or otherwise interrupt the keyboard or computer while the update is taking place. When finished, Mac users will also need to restart their computers.
