A few days back, a fisherman in Alaska caught a shortraker rockfish weighing almost 40 pounds (over 18 kilograms). As impressive as the size of this fish's waistline is, what's truly mind-blowing is the fact that, according to several experts, this fish is approximately 200 years old.

Sources explain that specialists were able to estimate how old the fish Henry Liebman had caught was by closely examining one of its ear bones.

Just like trees add another ring to their trunks each and every year, this bone sports growth rings that indicate the age of the fish.

Judging by how many growth rings specialists were able to count, it was concluded that the fish had been born about two centuries ago.

Biological samples collected and sent to a laboratory for analysis are expected to confirm these estimates.

The record-setting rockfish is 41 inches (104 centimeters) long. Fisherman Henry Liebman wants to have it mounted.
