Research suggests Apple’s cheaper iPhone coming as part of the 2018 generation might have a different purpose

A new research shows that the number of new iPhone users coming from Android reaches 20 percent every quarter, and most of them choose more affordable configurations and not necessarily the latest-generation models.

CIRP data reveals that many Android owners switching to iPhone are particularly interested in versions that are more affordable, mostly because they try to match the price point in the Android ecosystem.

The vast Android world is the home of devices of all sizes and price ranges, whereas iPhones are mostly sold with a premium price tag. This is one of the reasons Android switchers pick older iPhone models, which are typically sold for less than the latest generations.

More affordable iPhone landing in September

Statistics show that Android users buy the iPhone SE at twice the rate as iPhone users, while the iPhone X is purchased at half the rate as iPhone owners. This means that while existing iPhone owners are particularly interested in upgrading to the latest model, Android users aren’t very keen on doing the same, and instead choose older iPhones that cost less.

“The former Android users gravitate to the lowest-priced iPhone models, which makes sense to us, with Android phones offering a wide range of models, many at relatively low-price points. And since everything on an iPhone is new to them, there is less value in purchasing the latest flagship model with the most advanced features,” CIRP is being quoted as saying the research.

Additionally, no less than 4 in 10 Android users moving to an iPhone get the Plus model coming with a 5.5-inch screen, again because most previously owned a device with a similarly-sized display in the Android world. For comparison, only 30 percent of iPhone users opt for a Plus model.

Apple is projected to launch a new more affordable iPhone in September, and this device could be particularly aimed at these users coming from the Android world.
