According to a statistic, approximately 2 million American children with ages ranging from 12 to 19 years have pre-diabetes condition, which is directly linked to obesity and inactivity. This condition makes them vulnerable to diabetes and to cardiovascular problems.

In the US, one teenager in 14 suffers from diabetes, while for those having this pre-diabetes condition, the ratio changes to one in 6.

''The numbers are definitely concerning", said study coauthor Dr. Venkat Narayan.

Approximately 20 million Americans are suffering from diabetes, most of them being diagnosed with the Type 2 one, which affects the human body's ability to use insulin, the hormone that regulates the level of sugar in the blood. This type of diabetes is linked to being overweight and inactive.

Out of the 177,000 Americans with ages under 20 suffering from diabetes, most of them are suffering from Type 1, in which the body produces a small or even inexistent amount of insulin. But the fact that worries doctors the most is the increase in number of the young persons suffering from Type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Francine Kaufman, head of the Diabetes Center at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, said that the percentage of children with Type 2 diabetes has increased in 10 years from 4 to 25.
