As soon as Safari 3.1 was out as "the world's fastest browser," 1Password simply couldn't keep up the pace and stopped working with the web browser. More recently though, Apple's standard application for surfing the web is back at being friends with the password manager, thanks to a maintenance update on behalf of Agile Web Solutions.

The latest version of 1Password looks better, feels better, sports a new Wallet feature for credit cards, compatibility with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, a new Sync to iPhone feature and a bunch of fixes too.

To make a long story short, especially for those who depend on the Agile Web Solutions' password manager, version 2.5.12 adds Safari support once again, and is available right now as a free download for earlier version owners of the software (version 2.4 and earlier). Mac users wanting to pick up on the software starting now will have to fork out $39.95 (Demo version also available).

It's worth the squeeze really, as it not only keeps track of all your web passwords, but can also sign you in automatically wherever inputting your user name, password and other credentials are required. You can define multiple identities too. 1Password even protects less Internet-savvy folks from phishing sites. Here's how.

This release also adds improvements to 1Password Reader for Palm, integrated help, new Assistant for first time users and support for the latest Camino night builds, says Agile Web Solutions. After upgrading to this version, a Migration Assistant will launch to help migrate you from previous versions to the latest keychain format. Your original 1Passwd.keychain file will not be modified, the company responsible for the software assures. A new 1Password.keychain file will be created for you instead. As soon as 2.5 is installed, the original 1Passwd keychain is no longer needed. Users should however keep it for backup purposes, the company advises.

1Password is now compatible with the following browsers and their respective versions: Safari 2.0+, Firefox 1.5+, Camino 1.0+, OmniWeb 5.5+, DEVONagent 2.0+, or NetNewsWire 2.1+

Note: Your master password will be used to protect your keychain data with maximum strength encryption, which is why you should really consider picking a strong password.
