At Computex Taipei 2007

SDHC memory cards represent the future of the Secure Digital format, as they have provided very high storage capacities while retaining the same physical dimensions. The number of manufacturers that jumped aboard the Secure Digital High Capacity bandwagon is quite high, one of them being the Kingmax company, who is showcasing at the Computex 2007 show in Taipei its latest SDHC offering: a memory card with a whopping 16 GB SDHC capacity.

The card, presented in Kingmax's booth, was identified by our tech-inquisitive colleagues from "The Inquirer", and offered a non-formated capacity of 16GB. This is not exactly a well-kept secret (Kingmax announced it back in March), the fact that they've actually been able to deliver on their promise is quite impressive.

As you might know, the SDHC uses the FAT32 file system which supports the higher capacity instead of FAT16. Even if it uses the same form factor as SD, the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing). The SDHC cards have SD Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association, as follows: Class 2: 2 MB/s, Class 4: 4 MB/s, Class 6: 6 MB/s.

However, SD and SDHC devices do have some problems. Thus, SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, while standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices. This will lead to the development of a whole new range of card readers and card slots, which will open the way for true high-capacity portable storage.

There's no info regarding the pricing or the availability of the Kingmax 16 GB SDHC card, but we sure do hope that these things will hit the shelves as soon as possible, even if they're going to be probably rather pricy in the beginning. Imagine, 16 GB of memory in your cell phone or digital camera....sweet!
