According to the latest DisplaySearch published research results, 120Hz LCD TV panels registered a 57 percent growth in shipments during the third quarter of the year, up to 3.6 million units from 2.3 million in Q2. The shipments of 120Hz LCD TV panels accounted for 16 percent of all 32-inch and above segment and 27 percent of 40-inch and above LCD TV panel shipments in the quarter.

At the same time, shipments of notebook panels with LED backlights went up by 63 percent from the second quarter due to cost reductions and the launch of new notebook PC models. The shipments climbed from 1.3 million in Q2 to 2.1 million in the third quarter of the year. The leader in 120Hz LCD TV panel shipments is Samsung Electronics based on demands from its major TV customers Samsung and Sony.

Regarding 120Hz panel shipments, DisplaySearch says that the penetration grows as the panel size increases courtesy of the aggressive promotion panel makers and TV brands deliver. The 52-inch and above segment registered the highest penetration of 120Hz, with a 59 percent share. The 46-inch and 47-inch marked 41 percent, 42-inch had 25 percent, 22 percent went to 40-inch, 10 to 32-inch full HD panels, and 6 percent to 32-inch HD panels.

Notebook panels with LED backlights registered a 5.4 percent penetration during the third quarter of the year, up from 3.4 percent registered during Q2. Low cost and new LED backlight structures triggered adoption, leading to a 12.2 percent penetration forecast for the fourth quarter of the year. Major PC vendors have announced their plans to release many new LED notebook models in the first half of 2009, and the expectations regarding the penetration of LED backlights into notebook panels have been raised to more than 25 percent for Q2 2009.

12.1-inch, 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch were at the lead of the LED backlight notebook panel market during the third quarter of this year. Previsions say that 16:9 ratio panels will largely adopt LED backlights in 2009. TMDisplay is the leader of the market, as it mainly delivers 12.1-inch and 13.3-inch panels with LED backlights, followed by AU Optronics (AUO) and LG Display.
