Microsoft has sold in excess of 100 million licenses of Office 2010 since the latest iteration of the productivity suite hit commercial availability.

The first statistics related to the commercial success of Office 2010 were made public at the company’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2011.

For the past year or so, Microsoft, although praising the success of Office 2007’s successor, proved extremely shy when it came down to revealing specific about Office 2010’s adoption rate.

In fact, until WPC 2011, the company has largely remained mute on the progress of the productivity suite on the market, unlike the uptake data for Windows 7, which it offered without hesitation.

It took Windows 7 some 20 months to reach the 400 million sold licenses milestone, but it appears that Microsoft’s other cash cow is being embraced less warmly by customers.

At approximately 13 months since the general availability deadline, the Redmond giant offered the first info related to the number of copies that it shipped so far.

“Office, Office, Office. Office 2010 shipped last year. We've already sold over 100 million licenses. It's unbelievable, thank you,” Microsoft Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Steve Ballmer said.

Microsoft has recently launched Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the first upgrade to the productivity suite, which is also available for download to customers of Office related products, such as SharePoint.

In addition, the Redmond company also introduced Office in the Cloud, under the brand Office 365. Not offered as a Cloud-based replacement to Office 2010, Office 365 is a collection of productivity services available on a subscription model to customers.

While Office 2010 has been upgraded, the software giant’s focus already shifted to the next major iteration of the productivity suite, currently dogfooded and referred to internally, as well as outside of Redmond, under the codename Office 15.
