Last week, a total of ten men from China have been sentenced to around two years in prison each for hacking over 11,500 World of Warcraft (WoW) accounts and defrauding their owners.

According to Kotaku, one of them, named Chen, started buying access to compromised WoW accounts. He and his accomplices paid around $1 (€0.73) for an account. They sold the gold and gear they found in them for around $3 (€1.5) per account.

Soon after, one of the men hired by Chen started his own WoW account hijacking business. In total, the fraudsters made at least $10,800 (€7,900).

Chen has been sentenced to 2 years in prison and ordered to pay a $8,000 (€5,850) fine. The rest will spend just under two years in jail. They’ve been fined $1,000 (€730).

The illegally obtained goods and the computers used to commit the crimes have been confiscated by authorities.
