When Apple issued the 10.5.4 update, we reported enhancements spanned over areas such as AirPort, iCal, Safari, Spaces and Expose and more, with Apple noting that General Enhancements include recent Apple security updates and RAW image support for several cameras (among others). If you haven't had the chance to look at the list of supported new cameras and their respective formats, it's a good thing you dropped by.

First off, let's have a look at what cameras 10.5.3 added support for. When the company rolled out Mac OS X 10.5.3, towards the end of May, the Cupertino-based Mac maker listed the following cameras as being supported by the OS:

- Hasselblad CFV-16 - Hasselblad H3D-31 - Hasselblad H3D-31II - Leaf Aptus 54S - Leaf Aptus 65S - Nikon D60 - Olympus E-3 - Pentax *ist DL2 - Pentax *ist DS2 - Pentax K100D Super - Sony DSLR-A200 - Sony DSLR-A350

All these cameras are supported by Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later, which means that the current version of your OS (if you've been responsible enough to upgrade to 10.5.4) also supports them.

Now, with the release of 10.5.4, Apple noted on its support page: "Many digital cameras offer options to save pictures in digital camera RAW format," further stating that "Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto. Mac OS X Leopard provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from the following cameras."

And here's the list:

- Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi / Kiss Digital x2 / EOS 450D - Epson R-D1 / R-D1s - Leaf AFi 7 - Leaf AFi 6 - Leaf AFi 5 - Pentax K200D - Pentax K20D

Just as with the 10.5.3 update, these cameras will also be supported by future versions of Mac OS X. As such, if you are using one of these cameras and you are having trouble with certain RAW files, it's high time you upgraded to 10.5.4.
