A 10-year-old has found $10,000 (€7,700) in $100 (€77) bills stashed away in a Kansas City hotel located near the airport.

The Kansas City Star reports that Tyler Schaefer checked in at the Hilton Kansas City Airport hotel on Saturday with his dad, Cody Schaefer.

Schaefer works as a mechanic and a truck driver and he was meeting his ex-wife, a resident of South Dakota as settled in their custody agreement.

He describes having a very inquisitive son who loves to poke around.

"He looks for stuff at random. He's very observant," he says.

According to KCCI, he found the cash in a drawer, much to his father's dismay. Cody Schaefer's initial reaction was panic, and he wanted nothing to do with the cash.

"We just let him open all the drawers and he's like, 'Oh look! I found some money,' and we're like, 'Yeah, OK.' He pulled it out of the drawer and it was a bunch of money," he recalls.

"I didn't know if it was real. [...] I showed it to my dad and he said it was real," Tyler adds.

The money was organized in neatly stacked bills, the series on which were not consecutive.

"I actually think that there's something a little hinky going on," Sgt. Randy Francis of the Kansas City Police Department comments.

The police are investigating the original owner, but they believe that the cash could have been there for months.

“I think I would know I was missing $10,000 (€7,700) pretty quick,” Schaefer notes.

If nobody claims it in seven months, they might get to keep the find. In that case, it will go to Tyler's college fund. Even if that does not happen, Cody Schaefer has no regrets.

“I didn’t come there with $10,000 (€7,700) and I didn’t leave with $10,000 (€7,700), so it was a wash,” he says.
