Work on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update continues at full speed, but everyone expects it to land in a few weeks, as all signs pointed to a launch in July, the same month when Windows 10 itself celebrates the first anniversary.

But according to a post by Microsoft, the Anniversary Update is scheduled to go live on August 2 for retail users, so we might have to wait a few more days than initially expected to get it.

Interestingly, this release date was published “accidentally” on the company’s press release website, so the feed was sent to millions of users around the world. Microsoft rushed to remove the post shortly after publishing it, so either someone pressed the publish button too soon or the company just wanted to tease us with the release date.

Still version 1607?

Previous information on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update suggested that the final build could land as version 1607, a hint at the release date - the first two numbers indicate the year while the other two the month, so it’s July 2016.

But with Microsoft now planning to release this final version of Windows 10 in early August, it would make more sense to call it version 1608, but no information is available in this regard.

On the other hand, it’s worth noting that the final build of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update will go live to Windows insiders first, which is very likely to happen at least one week before the public launch. And this is obviously expected to take place in July.

Certainly, there’s more to find out about Microsoft’s plans for the final version of the Anniversary Update, and given the fact that the company removed that press release so fast, we’re still waiting for a full announcement to confirm that August 2 is indeed the date. For the moment, the Anniversary Update is taking shape up quite nicely, and the latest builds seem to be really fast and stable.
