Some Galaxy S8 units ship with UFS 2.0 storage

A while ago, some Huawei P10 users noticed that their smartphones didn’t ship with the UFS 2.1 storage, as the company previously advertised. Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu has since apologized for the way the whole matter was handled and announced a series of measures.

But it seems that Huawei isn’t the only smartphone maker to be involved in such a blunder. Some owners of Galaxy S8 smartphones noticed that the devices didn’t feature UFS 2.1 storage, but instead the inferior UFS 2.0, according to a post on XDA developers forum.

It was later revealed that UFS 2.1 is found in the majority of Galaxy S8 Plus units, while UFS 2.0 storage is featured on some standard Galaxy S8 smartphones. Samsung previously stated that all Galaxy S8 units would feature the latest UFS 2.1 storage and even mentioned this fact in its specs page for the new flagships.

Galaxy S8 units with Snapdragon 835 platform seem to feature UFS 2.1

Samsung recently removed the UFS 2.1 mention from the Galaxy S8 listing on its website, stating only that the Galaxy S8 ships with UFS 2.1, but storage configuration can vary from one region to another.

However, storage type should stay the same, considering that the latest UFS 2.1 offers higher processing speed. Users have noticed that Galaxy S8 variants running Snapdragon chipsets include UFS 2.0 storage, while those with Exynos processors appear to have UFS 2.1.

It’s worth mentioning that users won’t notice a difference in processing speed during daily use. In order to check if a Galaxy S8 smartphone ships with UFS 2.1 or 2.0 storage, users would need to access the Google Play Store, get the AndroBench app and check the specs from there. UFS 2.0 delivers speeds between 500MB/s and 600MB/s, while UFS 2.1 is capable of reading data with speeds ranging from 750MB/s to 800MB/s. Samsung has yet to comment on the matter.
