The camera setup would capture clear photographs

Back in March 2016, Samsung filed a patent application in South Korea for a dual-lens camera configuration that uses a telephoto and wide-angle lens. The patent application was just published recently by the USPTO, according to a recent report.

The patent application is titled “Digital Photographing Apparatus and Method of Operating the Same” and reveals a dual-camera system. The wide-angle lens would capture an image of the main subject, while the telephoto lens would be used for seizing a zoomed-in image of the subject.

The device’s processor would be configured to get motion information of the main subject based on the two images. It would then determine which is the main image based on the motion information that it acquires.

The dual-camera setup would be used for video as well

The system will be configured in such a way that, if the velocity of the subject is greater than a predetermined speed, the processor will prioritize the wide-angle camera. However, if the subject were to move slower than the preset speed, then the telephoto image would be the main one.

Moreover, the patent application shows an image in which both camera photos would be shown on the phone’s screen; the main image would be displayed full-screen, while the other one would be shown on top.

Samsung could be designing this system to work for video as well, and the integrated processor would switch the main image automatically, depending on the motion of the subject. This would allow users to create quite interesting videos that include slow and dynamic motion elements.

Considering that this is merely a patent application, it’s difficult to say if Samsung intends to develop this technology or it already started work on such a camera setup. It would be quite exciting to see this new technology on the upcoming Galaxy S8, but there hasn’t been any other information to suggest that.
