UPDATE (September 2) CEO at Samsung Electronics, DJ Koh, to reportedly hold a press briefing at 5 p.m. (Korea Time) today to announce a "global" recall of Galaxy Note 7 units.

Over the past few days, we’ve seen many Samsung Galaxy Note 7 users reporting that their phones caught fire or downright exploded when charging. The users claimed that the units were charging with the original Samsung charger, which would indicate that they weren’t at fault for the incident.

A report coming from Yohapnews in South Korea mentions that Samsung could soon announce a recall of its Galaxy Note 7 units because of faulty batteries. The report indicates that the units sold in South Korea and abroad in less than a week will be recalled.

Apparently, a company official has made the announcement stating that the cause of the reported explosions could be the battery inside the phone. The official has said under anonymity that "the most important thing is the safety of our customers and we don't want to disappoint our loyal customers.”

Samsung is also expected to announce the result of its investigation into the cause of the reported explosions, and the company has already admitted that shipments of the Galaxy Note 7 have been delayed, with some rumors suggesting that especially in South Korea.

Faulty batteries are reportedly found in 0.1% of all sold Galaxy Note 7 units

Moreover, the official claims that products with the problematic battery are found in less than 0.1% of the entire volume sold. The official also mentions that it’s unlikely that Samsung will recall the smartphones on Friday since the company is currently in talks with Verizon and other business partners on the issue.

Just today, we've reported that Samsung SDI, Samsung Electronics’ sister company that equips the Note 7 with 3,500mAh batteries, stated that the company didn’t receive any indication that the batteries could be at fault.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is the company’s latest flagship, and the possible recall would certainly affect the company’s sales. However, it could strengthen the South Korean giant’s credibility as it would show that it puts consumer safety above everything else.
