Samsung announced its latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, at the end of March, about one month later than the Galaxy S7’s unveil from last year. Pre-orders for the smartphones started in select markets in April, while the phones were gradually released in more countries around the world.

And now, Samsung has just revealed that Galaxy S8 sales surpassed the 5 million mark. “Although we cannot provide detailed figures, the sales are going smoothly around the globe. The combined sales already are beyond 5 million units,” a Samsung official was quoted in a report.

The smartphone maker intends to make the Galaxy S8 available in 120 countries by the end of this month, including China.

Samsung is expected to sell about 20 million Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones by the end of the second quarter, while annual sales should reach between 50 million and 60 million units. Pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have been quite strong, as Samsung’s latest flagship managed to surpass the 1 million pre-order mark in Korea just a few days after its release.

Samsung wants Galaxy S8 sales to surpass the Galaxy S7

The Galaxy S8+ has been quite popular, signaling the fact that consumers have started to be more interested in Samsung devices with larger displays and higher battery capacity.

In contrast, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge managed to record total sales of 55 million during the one year since they were launched. Still, price adjustments and promotions from the past few months surely boosted sales, convincing some to go with the Galaxy S7, rather than wait for the S8 to arrive.

Samsung wants the Galaxy S8 to surpass previous sales records, especially before the Galaxy Note 8 arrives later this year. Aside from the standard Galaxy S8, Samsung is also preparing to launch the Galaxy S8 Active at AT&T next month with a rugged design and enhanced battery capacity. The Galaxy S8 will certainly help Samsung post record profits for the second quarter of this year.
