The development team working on Rainbow Six Siege at Ubisoft is planning to deliver a lot of new content and post-launch support for the shooter, and the first big free update for the game is called Black Ice and is supposed to be offered in January of next year.

In a blog post on the official site, the company explains that gamers will get free access to one new map with a unique design, as well as two new operators who have not yet been named, both able to use special weapons and with a character power that will open up new strategies.

Black Ice for Rainbow Six Siege will further include gameplay tweaks based on the feedback coming from gamers and Ubisoft is also adding more skins for weapons, which will have no direct effect on gameplay.

The company does not want to split the player base in any way, and that means all the new maps and modes launched for the shooter as part of the big four planned content updates will be entirely free.

Tweaks to core mechanics will also arrive as part of separate patches, and events and competitions are also planned as the team aims to keep as many fans playing Rainbow Six Siege for as long as possible.

The four planned content drops will coincide with the moment when the developers plan to reset ranked play, making sure that all fans have a chance to start off again and try to improve their performance.

Ubisoft has not revealed an exact date for the deployment of Black Ice.

Renown is the in-game currency for Rainbow Six Siege

Gamers will be able to get access to it by simply playing the included modes, although it is unclear whether the amount is fixed or linked to player performance.

Gamers will be able to use it to buy access to operators, weapons, skins for them and other new content that Ubisoft will offer for Rainbow Six Siege.

The company says that about two weeks of play for a normal gamer will be required to get access to a new character and that it is also allowing players who do not have the time to spend real world money to get another currency for unlocks, called R6 credits.

They represent the only way to get the higher tier weapon skins, with the lower ones also accessible to those who use Renown.

When using R6 credits, an operator will cost the equivalent of 4.99 dollars or Euro.

Ubisoft is using the dual currency system that many modern titles are offering, making it easy for gamers who are ready to spend money to get new content while also offering a way to simply unlock it by playing the shooter.

Rainbow Six Siege will deliver new maps, modes and operators about every three months, giving gamers a chance to stock up on Renown and quickly unlock content once it is offered.

The tactically driven shooter, which focuses on multiplayer action, will launch on December 1 and can be played on the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
