It brings iPhone and iPad apps to Windows 10

Windows Phone developers are probably happy that Microsoft's Project Astoria might not see the light of day after all, but we can't say the same about Project Islandwood.

While Project Astoria's main goal is to bring Android apps to Windows 10, Project Islandwood is meant to allow iPhone and iPad apps to run on Windows 10.

Following a Microsoft official statement that got quoted over the weekend, we now believe Project Astoria might not be finished at all and will probably be put on hold indefinitely because work is not going as planned.

That makes Project Islandwood more important since it's the only way that Microsoft can now boost the number of apps for its mobile ecosystem.

Bringing iPhone and iPad apps to Windows 10 seems to be mandatory for Microsoft nowadays because Windows Store lacks the variety that Google Play Store or App Store offer to their customers.

Project Islandwood is nowhere near ready, developer claims

As WMPU points out, Microsoft recently published a new video that explains in short how Project Islandwood works and what it is all about.

Unfortunately, what's shown in the video and what Microsoft has to offer in reality might be two different things, as one of the developers that has tried Project Islandwood notes:

“I am sorry, but what was promised in the project Islandwood session video and what was finally presented are two completely different things.

“The project is in a pitiful state, with a quasy archaic iOS 6 level API, and even as that, so much of it is implemented as stubs or, worse, in a very naive and incorrect manner.

“This project is at least two years away from being able to call it remotely ready, by which time it would be five years of API behind the times.”

The statement above dates from last month, so Microsoft couldn't have done too many changes. If this proves to be accurate when the Redmond-based company decides to launch Project Islandwood, then Windows 10 smartphone users might not have access to iOS apps anytime soon.
