14 DAY TRIAL // It looks like Philips will soon become one of the few companies that still launch clamshell smartphones. Samsung, Gionee and a few other Chinese handset makers continue to release flip phones, even though they have become a niche product.
The next clamshell coming soon to China is the Philips V800. The smartphone has been recently spotted at TENAA, the Chinese regulatory commission, which is why we know quite a few details about the V800.
First of all, the clamshell is powered by Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system right out of the box. Android 5.1 Lollipop is still a good choice for mid-range smartphones, so even if it doesn't come with Marshmallow onboard, Philips V800 looks promising enough.
According to the listing at TENAA, Philips V800 comes equipped with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor though the chipset is not mentioned.
Rather small 3.7-inch HD display
Since the Philips V800 is a clamshell smartphone, it comes as no surprise that it features two displays. The internal, as well as the external, display is 3.7-inch in size and supports HD (720p) resolution.
The quad-core processor is paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 64GB via microSD card slot.
Philips V800 sports a more than decent 13-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which features LED flash, autofocus and full HD (1080p) video recording. In the front, Philips' clamshell packs a 5-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls.
It's unclear what battery will power the V800, but we do know the smartphone comes with 4G LTE support, as well as other connectivity options like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB 2.0 and GPS.
No word on price and availability yet, but since the clamshell has been certified at TENAA, we suspect it will be officially introduced in the next couple of weeks.
