Moto Z smartphones and their Moto Mods have been quite successful for Motorola. The modular smartphone concept seems to appeal to the market, as Motorola has recently said that it intends to launch at least 12 Moto Mods yearly.

A new Moto Mod is under development as part of Motorola’s “Transform the Smartphone” challenge which allows independent creators to produce a Moto Mod prototype for the chance to be sold by Verizon in the US.

The new Modo Mod, which carries the name the Ultimate Moto Z Mod is a bit thicker than a regular Moto shell case with just 3mm in thickness. The Moto Mod is funded on IndieGoGo and it provides many additional features to the phone, according to 9to5Google.

Wireless charging and IR blaster for the Moto Z

The Moto Mod would need to be attached to the back of the smartphone and connected to the device pins in order to work. It adds wireless charging, which is currently available only through certain Moto Z battery mods.

The Moto Mod would also add the ability to transmit IR signals from the Moto Z phone, allowing users to control TVs, sound systems and other devices simply by using their smartphones. Moto Mods currently sell for over $50, while the new Moto Mod has a price of $35 for the wireless charging version and $45 for the added IR blaster feature.

The Ultimate Moto Z Mod has all the chances to be a success, considering its affordable price and the fact that it’s the thinnest of all Moto Mods, except for the regular shell case, which doesn’t really bring any functionality or convenience.

The project is estimated to complete in November 2017 and multiple claims have already been made. Motorola officials have recently said that they plan to launch a dozen Moto Mods this year and that such modular accessories would work with all future Motorola smartphones.
