The update should be released for the masses in a few weeks

For a long time, Motorola was among the first to provide major Android updates to its smartphones, and even after being acquired twice by Google and Lenovo, respectively, the US-based company kept the bar raised.

Unfortunately, those of you who purchased the Moto Z Play because you thought you'd be getting faster Android updates are probably disappointed by the fact that Motorola hasn't yet released the highly-anticipated Android 7.0 Nougat update.

Instead, the Verizon-branded Moto Z, as well as other smartphones like the Moto G and Moto G Plus, has been upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat before the Moto Z Play. But the good news is it won't be long until the smartphone receives the long-awaited update.

The folks over at AndroidPolice report Motorola has already started testing Android 7.0 Nougat for the Moto Z Play. Some of those registered with the Motorola Feedback Network have been recently informed by the US company that they will soon receive an early preview Nougat build on their Moto Z Play.

Those who wish to take part in the beta must answer a few questions Motorola included in a survey, but what matters most is that you “must be a member of good standing of the Motorola Owners Forum to be included.”

Keep in mind that this early preview build will only be pushed to unlocked Moto Z Play units, so Verizon's Moto Z Play Droid model might get the update much later.

According to Motorola, the Moto Z Play is slated to receive Android 7.0 Nougat update sometime in March, but the fact that the company has already kicked off the beta program makes us believe it's possible to get it slightly earlier.

As mentioned, the carrier-branded versions of Moto Z Play will most likely be getting the Android 7.0 Nougat update after the unlocked model.
