14 DAY TRIAL // Today is the day when Microsoft rolls out cumulative updates for Windows 10, and since the Creators Update is also available for download, the company also releases a patch for version 1703.
The two highlights of today’s rollout are KB4015217 and KB4015583, which are aimed at the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (version 1607) and Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703), respectively.
These cumulative updates do not bring any new features, but only improvements and bug fixes, and it goes without saying that everyone should install them as soon as possible. Furthermore, since they land on Patch Tuesday, they also include security fixes that address vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s products.
Although the Creators Update launches today, KB4015583 is not the first public cumulative update for it as Microsoft released several others in the last few days for users who installed the new OS version via the Update Assistant.
Reboots required
As for the Anniversary Update, this cumulative update pushes version to 14393.1066 and fixes bugs in Microsoft apps, while also patching Edge, Internet Explorer, and the Windows kernel.
These cumulative updates are shipped via Windows Update and need to be installed as soon as possible. As it happened in the past, there are concerns they could fail to install, though we’ve learned from the previous Creators Update cumulative updates that Microsoft finally managed to address all these issues and offer smooth performance.
In the case of the Anniversary Update, there were lots of botched cumulative updates which not only that failed to install but also caused other issues once they were deployed, so we’re going to keep an eye on KB4015217 to see if anything goes wrong with it as well.
IT admins should have in mind that cumulative updates require a system reboot to complete the install and this means that work needs to be saved before starting the deployment.
