You can now restore your phone on the desktop

As we reported to you not a long time ago, Microsoft added Lumia 950 and 950 XL to the list of phones supported by the Windows Insider program, so owners of these two flagships can now install preview builds of Windows 10 Mobile too.

And because we're talking about unreleased versions of Windows that could be highly unstable and come with a lot of bugs, Microsoft has also updated the Windows Device Recovery Tool to make it possible for users to restore their phones should anything bad happen.

Basically, if you install Windows 10 Mobile preview builds on your Lumia 950 XL, for instance, and something doesn't work as expected, you can simply connect the device to your PC, install the app, and restore the phone to the original software.

We've heard some people say that, after connecting Lumia 950 and 950 XL to PCs and launching the WDRT app, a firmware update asked to install too, but we didn't receive anything for our phones after the first connection was established.

Final build of Windows 10 Mobile very soon

While Microsoft is clearly getting ready for new preview builds since it has added its newest flagships to the supported device list, the company is also expected to release the final tidbits of the operating system for Windows Phone device owners too, and thus make the new OS available for everyone and not just insiders.

Lumia 950 and 950 XL owners, however, should keep in mind that installing preview builds of Windows 10 doesn't come risk-free, as running pre-release software could lead to bugs and issues that might dramatically impact device performance.

Unfortunately, the 10586 OS version running on Lumia 950 XL is already pretty buggy, so most owners would have no problem installing a preview build anyway.

But should you decide to do that, make sure you download the Windows Device Recovery Tool before to always be on the safe side.
