Immediately after announcing the release of Linux kernel 4.1.27 LTS, kernel developer Sasha Levin informed the community about the immediate availability for download of Linux kernel 3.18.36 LTS.

Linux kernel 3.18 is an LTS (Long Term Support) release that will receive updates and patches for a few more months, until January 2017. This is the thirty-sixth maintenance version, which arrives only two weeks from the debut of the previous maintenance update, Linux kernel 3.18.35 LTS, to change a total of 44 files, with 327 insertions and 124 deletions.

"I'm announcing the release of the 3.18.36 kernel. All users of the 3.18 kernel series must upgrade," said Sasha Levin. "The updated 3.18.y git tree can be found at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git linux-3.18.y and can be browsed at the normal kernel.org git web browser: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=summary."

Here's what's new Linux kernel 3.18.36 LTS

Looking at the appended shortlog, we can notice that Linux kernel 3.18.36 LTS brings pretty much the same changes that were implemented by the developer in the Linux kernel 4.1.27 LTS update. Among them are improvements to the PowerPC (PPC), ARM, PA-RISC, and x86 hardware architectures, small changes to the ecryptfs and procfs filesystems, as well as some fixes for the mac80211 wireless framework, the KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) implementation, and crypto.

Of course, there are also updated drivers for things like Nouveau, General-purpose input/output (GPIO), CPUFreq, crypto, Cirrus, Intel GMA 500, Matrox MGA G200, Radeon, IRQ Chip, and SCSI. All users of a GNU/Linux distribution powered by a kernel from the Linux 3.18 LTS series must update as soon as possible to version 3.18.36. The sources of Linux kernel 3.18.36 LTS are also available for download via our site or from kernel.org.
