Tens of thousands of units sold until now

Rogers Wireless announced that Apple's iPhone 3G was enjoying an "unprecedented popular demand" in Canada. Although the carrier does not mention the exact number of new iPhones sold in the Northern country, it says that several tens of thousands of units were bought since the handset's release (July 11). Moreover, Rogers stated that lots of users continue[admark=1] to demand the new handset, hence the carrier has ordered other tens of thousands of iPhone 3Gs that should be, as of today, on sale in its retails stores across Canada.

Together with the self-flattering announcement also came an official Rogers statement. John Boynton, SVP and Chief Marketing Officer of the largest Canadian mobile carrier, said: "As Canada's leading wireless carrier, Rogers Wireless is thrilled to bring iPhone 3G to Canadians on Canada's fastest wireless network. With iPhone 3G, we've had the best weekend sales of a handset in Rogers Wireless history. We want to thank all our customers for their enthusiastic response, as we welcome our new iPhone 3G customers to the fastest and most reliable network in Canada, and we appreciate the loyalty of all our existing customers who upgraded to an iPhone 3G."

The Rogers announcement comes after the one of Apple, which said that, since its July 11 debut, the new iPhone was sold in more than 1 million units worldwide.

Rogers, together with its subsidiary Fido, are the only GSM/HSDPA carriers from Canada and the only ones to offer the iPhone 3G for Canadian users. Their iPhone 3G prices and data plans are similar: the 8GB iPhone is sold for as little as $199, while the 16GB version comes for at least $299. Of course, these prices are only available together with an expensive data plan and a contract agreement for no less than three years, but this has not stopped iPhone fans from buying the handset. That free breakfast that Rogers and Fido offered in the morning of July 11 seems to have done wonders.
